If I had 90 minutes to fix your social media marketing strategy, this is what I’d do

Before we begin, let’s get one thing clear. You’re almost definitely overthinking your marketing. Creating content for your business should feel fun. It shouldn’t cause stress.

And if it does bore you or stresses you out, then this needs fixing.

Because fun, simple content is what works best (take it from someone who always used to overthink her marketing).

And a few simple tweaks will make your life much easier...

Here are the four things I’d do to fix your marKEting

#1 Get clear on your ideal client

If you don’t know your target client well, how do you know what social platforms to be on? What messaging angles will you use? What content do you need to create?

In short, you don’t.

So get clear on these before anything else.

#2 Find the middle ground

You don’t need to be on every social media platform. And you’ll just burn yourself out trying.

Instead, think about the top 1-3 platforms your ideal client will spend time on. Then do the same for yourself. The crossover is where you need to be!

Why? Because it’s the place where you’re most likely to find your ideal client while also enjoying the time you spend on the platform. And the more you enjoy creating (and consuming) content, the more you will create, giving you a much better chance of landing on the right people’s social media feeds.

If you feel you need to be on another platform, then just repurpose the content you’ve already created into a format that works for the other platform!

#3 Get clear on your messaging

If you’re not trying to be on too many platforms, then I can guarantee you’re trying to say too many things.

Think about your 3 core messages surrounding what you do. Then make sure each piece of content covers something that would fit under one of those themes.

But Beth, what if I don’t have 3 core messages? Well, you’ve not sat down and thought about it hard enough. Chances are that there is someone out there already doing what you do. BUT they’re not you, and they don’t do it in the way that you do. The message behind your brand doesn’t need to be overly complicated, and 9 times out of 10 it’ll tie in with your core values too.

Take me for example. I’m a photographer and social media strategist, something that SO many other people do. But my why, and how I do it will be different. My core messages are:

  1. Marketing doesn’t need to be complicated

  2. Marketing your business should feel fun

  3. How you present yourself online should feel 100% like you

There are a few others, but these are the core values behind my brand, and as a result, every piece of content I create ties into one of these.

What would this look like for you?

#4 Have Fun

Don’t be afraid to try new things and experiment with your content. Jump on relevant trends. The more fun you have with your content, and the more personality you add to it, the more content you’ll create. And the more content you create that speaks directly to your ideal client, the more likely you are to bring them into your online world.
